El false friend de hoy es realize. ¡Atención! No es "realizar", por cómodo que nos quedaría que así fuera. Realize es "darse cuenta". Veamos un ejemplo:
1) Oh, no. I just realized I had a doctor's appointment an hour ago!
Ay, no. Me acabo de dar cuenta de que tenía turno con un médico hace una hora.
Otro:
2) When I decided to have two jobs, I didn't realize how hard it was going to be!
Cuando decidí tener dos trabajos, ¡no me di cuenta de lo difícil que iba a ser!
Realize también se puede usar con el sentido de "ser consciente de algo". Ejemplo:
3) Project Leader: OK, people. These orders have to be ready by next Wednesday. I realize that's only 5 days ahead so we are going to have to work this weekend.
Jefe de proyecto: OK, gente. Estos pedidos tienen que estar listos para el miércoles que viene. Soy consciente de que faltan solo 5 días así que vamos a tener que trabajar este fin de semana.
Realize también se puede usar, en lenguaje formal, para hablar del cumplimiento de una meta:
4) After years of hard work, she has finally realized her dream of becoming a UN interpreter.
Tras años de arduo trabajo, finalmente cumplió su sueño de convertirse en intérprete de la ONU.
