Let Down

Como saben, let significa "permitir" (My mother let me go to the party = "Mi mamá me dejó ir a la fiesta"), y down es... bueno, "abajo". ¿Qué significa entonces let down? Significa "decepcionar". Veamos algunos ejemplos:

1) A: I need you at the office tomorrow by 8 a.m., sharp.
B: No problem, I'll be there.
B: No hay problema, ahí estaré.
A: I'm counting on you. Don't let me down!
A: Cuento con vos. ¡No me decepciones!

2) A: Please, give me another chance, Mr. Smith. I promise I will do the job better. I won't let you down.
A: Por favor, deme otra oportunidad, Sr. Smith.

3) A: Please, give me another chance, honey. I know I was bad. I won't let you down!
A: Por favor, dame otra oportunidad, mi amor. Ya sé que estuve mal. ¡No te voy a decepcionar!

4) A: Are you going to give Rick another chance after he cheated on you?
A: ¿Le vas a dar otra oportunidad a Rick después de que te engañó?
B: I know... I've been let down so many times now, I'm sick and tired.
B: Ya sé... Me decepcionaron tantas veces ya.... Estoy harta.

Let down como phrasal verb también significa "bajar". Por ejemplo:

5) Let your hair down! You always wear it in a bun and it's such beautiful hair...

6) Can we let down the hem on this skirt? It's too short.
¿Podemos bajar el dobladillo de esta pollera? Es demasiado corta.

7) Let down a rope so I can climb up to you!

[At a construction site] [En una construcción]
Let down the pail easily now... We don't want the contents to be all over the place.

Were you ever let down? I hope not.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

Nobody ever loved me like she does,
Ooh she does, yeah she does.
And if somebody loved me like she do me,
Ooh she do me, yeah she does.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

I'm in love for the first time
Don't you know it's gonna last
It's a love that lasts forever,
It's a love that has no past.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

And from the first time that she really done me,
Ooh she done me, she done me good.
I guess nobody ever really done me,
Ooh she done me, she done me good.

Don't let me down, don't let me down, please.
Don't let me down, don't let me down, please.

Ow! Don't let me down
Don't let me down
(Can you dig it?)
Don't let me down.
