El phrasal verb de hoy es act up. ¿Qué tiene que ver la foto de la nena? ¡Todo! Act up significa "portarse mal", y se puede usar con nenes que se portan mal y con cosas que se "portan mal". Es decir, también puede significar "funcionar mal o de manera extraña". Veamos ejemplos para que quede bien claro.
1) My son acts up every time I give him vegetables. He folds his arms, makes faces, complains. I don't know what to do!
Mi hijo se porta mal cada vez que le doy verduras. Se cruza de brazos, pone caras, se queja. ¡No sé qué hacer!
2) The baby acted up all afternoon. She didn't eat, she didn't have her nap, she wouldn't stay quiet. Maybe there's something wrong with her.
La beba se portó mal toda la tarde. No comió, no hizo la siesta, estuvo inquieta. Quizá le pasa algo.
3) My computer has been acting up lately. It takes forever to start, the programmes aren't running well... I'm taking it to the technician.
Mi computadora estuvo andando mal últimamente. Tarda mil años en arrancar, los programas no andan bien... La voy a llevar al técnico.
4) The fridge is acting up. The freezer is working as the fridge, and the fridge is actually warm.
La heladera está andando mal. El freezer enfría como la heladera, y la heladera está caliente.
Act up también se usa para partes del cuerpo que tienen algún problema que se activa en un momento determinado. ¿Cómo es eso? Veamos otros ejemplos:
5) My knee is acting up again. I say it's going to rain tomorrow.
Me está molestando la rodilla de nuevo. Yo diría que mañana llueve.
6) My joints act up when the weather is dump.
Me molestan las articulaciones cuando está húmedo.
Did you act up a lot when you were children? (Ustedes, ¿se portaban mal muy seguido de chicos?)
