Sell Out
¿Conocen este phrasal verb? ¿Saben qué significa y cómo se usa? A ver si los sorprendo...
1) Sell out (of something) = Un negocio o un producto puede ser el sujeto de este phrasal verb en este primer uso. Significa "haber/se vendido todo lo que había disponible de algo".
1.a) We've sold out of these jeans in your size. Try again in a week. We might have some by then.
Vendimos todos los jeans como estos en su talle. Vuelva la semana que viene. Quizá tengamos para ese momento.
1.b) The tickets to your show sold out in 1 hour! You're going to be a big star!
¡Todas las entradas para tu show se acabaron en 1 hora! ¡Vas a ser una súper estrella!
2) Venderse. Este significado tiene que ver con la foto de arriba. Significa renunciar a nuestros principios o ideales en favor de ganar plata, una buena vida o ventajas políticas.
2.a) Mike was a hippie until this company offered him a great job with benefits and he sold out for it. Now he wears a suit, eats sushi, and drives expensive cars. I don't think he's happy though.
Miguel era hippie hasta que una empresa le ofreció un trabajo buenísimo con beneficios y se vendió. Ahora usa traje, come sushi y anda en autos caros. Pero yo no creo que sea feliz.
2.b) A: Wasn't this guy in the other political party?
¿Este tipo no estaba en el otro partido político?
B: Yeah... But then he sold out because he saw that he had a better chance of winning an election with the other party.
Sí... Pero después se vendió porque vio que en el otro tenía más posibilidades de ganar una elección.
De ahí también el sustantivo sell out, para hablar de este tipo de personas que cambian sus valores por plata o beneficios.
2.c) A: Are you coming to Martin's party?
¿Vas a la fiesta de Martín?
B: Martin? I wouldn't go with that sell out even if he was the last man on earth. He was our friend for a lot of years and then he left us for that group of kids who had a car and a pool.
¿Martín? No andaría con ese vendido/traidor si fuera el último hombre de la tierra. Fue nuestro amigo durante años y después nos dejó por ese grupo de chicos que tenían auto y pileta.
A: Yeah, he did kind of sell out, right?
Sí, se vendió un poco, ¿no?
3) Vender una parte de un negocio para dejar de ser parte de él.
3.a) A: Do you still have shares in that small tea company?
¿Seguís teniendo acciones en esa pequeña empresa de té?
B: Yes. But I'm selling out next year if business doesn't pick up.
Sí. Pero el año que viene vendo todo si la actividad no repunta.
