Meanings of Mean

¡Esta palabrita puede significar tantas cosas! Es, sin ir más lejos, la palabra "significar" en inglés. ¡Ja!

1) A: What does "maison" mean?
         ¿Qué quiere decir "maison"?
    B: It means "house".
        Significa "casa".

Y quiere decir mucho más, como verbo y como adjetivo.

Verbo:

2) Referirse a algo.

A: Can I have that shirt?
     ¿Me pasás esa camisa?
B: This one? The blue one?
    ¿Esta? ¿La azul?
A: No, I meant the white one. Thanks.
     No, me refería a la blanca. Gracias.

A: Can you call Charly?
     ¿Podés llamar a Charly?
B: I'm Charly...
    Yo soy Charly...
A: I meant Laura. Can you call Laura?
    Digo Laura. ¿Podés llamar a Laura?

3) Tener intención de (hacer) algo.

A: You lied to me!
     ¡Me mentiste!
B: I'm so sorry. I never meant to hurt you!
    Perdoname. No te quise lastimar. / No era mi intención lastimarte.

A: Hey, how are you? I've been meaning to call you!
     ¡Ey! ¿Cómo estás? Estuve pensando en llamarte / queriendo llamarte.

4) Tener un valor o importancia particular.

My family means everything to me. I would do anything for them.
Mi familia lo es todo para mí. Haría cualquier cosa por ellos.

Money means everything to shallow people. They cannot live without it.
La plata lo es todo para la gente superficial. No pueden vivir sin ella.

5) Destinado. (Se usa en forma pasiva y seguido de "to" o "for".)

This wasn't meant to happen.
Esto no tenía que pasar.

She is so meant for you! You have to be together!
¡Ella es para vos! ¡Tienen que estar juntos!

This money is meant for paying bills. Don't go shopping for clothes with it!
Esta plata es para pagar las cuentas. ¡No te vayas a comprar ropa con esto!

Como adjetivo:

6) Malo (malvado); cruel; mala onda.

A: Should you really be eating cookies with that extra weight?
     ¿Te parece que tendrías que estar comiendo galletitas, con ese peso que tenés de más?
B: Hey, that's mean!
    ¡Che, qué mala / qué  mala onda!

A: I'm sorry I said all those terrible things to you.
    Perdoname por decirte todas esas cosas feas.
B: Don't worry.
    No te preocupes.
A: No. I was mean, and you didn't deserve it. I apologize.
    No. Fui muy mala/cruel y no te lo merecías. Te pido disculpas.

A mean drunk

A: Sam is usually a great guy, but he's a mean drunk. 
     En general, Sam es re buen tipo, pero cuando toma, se pone malo.

7) Tacaño.

Ana: How was your date with Mike?
        ¿Cómo te fue en la cita con Mike?
Mary: Meh.... I don't know. We had a great time but then he insisted we split the check. I think he's kind of mean... with his money, you know.
           Y... No sé. Lo pasamos re bien pero después él insistió con que repartiéramos la cuenta. Me parece que es medio tacaño... con su plata, viste...

8) Excelente. Genial.

A: Are you coming to the party?
     ¿Venís a la fiesta?
B: I don't know... I'm tired.
     No sé... Estoy cansado.
A: I make a mean margarita! Are you going to miss them?
    ¡Hago unas margaritas geniales! ¿Te las vas a perder?

A: Are we playing tennis tomorrow?
     ¿Entonces jugamos al tenis mañana?
B: Oh yes. Beware, my partner plays a mean game of tennis!
     Ya lo creo. Te aviso que mi compañero juega muy bien al tenis / la rompe jugando al tenis.

También se puede usar como sustantivo (se usa en plural):

9) Medios.

A: The government should really do something about poverty.
     El gobierno realmente debería hacer algo con la pobreza.
B: They have the means but... do they have the will?
     Tienen los medios pero... ¿tienen la voluntad para hacerlo?


A: What are you going to write about for our history class?
     ¿Sobre qué vas a escribir para la clase de historia?
B: I'm thinking the means of transport in the nineteenth century.
    Estoy pensando en escribir sobre los medios de transporte en el siglo diecinueve.

Ya ven que mean can mean a lot of things! Ante la duda, ya saben que los diccionarios no muerden. You know what that means...
