Weather or whether?

Ayer vimos la diferencia entre climate y weather. Pero hay otro whether, que se pronuncia igual pero como ven, se escribe distinto.

Este whether es una conjunción que se usa como el if de las oraciones condicionales. Parece complicado así, ¿no? Pero en realidad es muy sencillo. Veamos ejemplos:



1) I don't know whether he's coming or not. He said he had to work.
    I dont't know if he's coming or not. He said he had to work.
    No sé si va a venir/vendrá o no. Dijio que tenía que trabajar.
   
2) He asked me whether I wanted to go dancing or to a movie.
    Me preguntó si quería ir a bailar o al cine.

En estos ejemplos, whether se usa para introducir dos opciones.

En otros casos, whether también se usa como either:

3) We will meet again, whether here or in New York, but we sure will.
   We will meet again, either here or in New York, but we sure will.
     Nos vamos a volver a ver, ya sea acá o en Nueva York, pero te aseguro que sí.

Y también se usa para frases como "te guste o no":

4) You will go to your room and do your homework, whether you like it or not!
     Te vas a ir a tu cuarto a hacer la tarea, ¡te guste o no!

5) She's getting married next week, whether you like it or not.
    Se casa la semana que viene, te guste o no.

¿Entendieron cómo se usa whether? Es más común de lo que se cree, así que sería bueno que lo vayan conociendo, aunque sea para reconocerlo y saber de qué se trata, y si pudieran incorporarlo a su vocabulario, sería muy provechoso.
