El phrasal verb call off significa "cancelar". Veamos algunos ejemplos:
1) David cheated on Mary. She's calling off the wedding.
David engañó a María. Ella va a cancelar la boda.
2) The game was called off because of the rain.
Se canceló el juego por lluvia.
3) We got the flu. We're calling off the trip until we get better.
Estamos con gripe. Cancelamos el viaje hasta que nos sintamos mejor.
Call off también se usa con el sentido de llamar a alguien (aunque más que nada se usa para llamar a un animal), para que deje de hacer algo malo o para que se vaya con uno. Sería un llamado de atención. Veamos otros ejemplos de este caso:
4) Come here, boy! Sorry, Mrs. Smith!
[Al perro] ¡Venga para acá! [A la señora] ¡Perdone, señora Smith!
The dog was digging a hole in Mrs. Smith's garden so the owner called it off.
El perro estaba cavando un pozo en el jardín de la señora Smith, y entonces el dueño lo llamó.
5) The general called off his men to retreat.
El general llamó a sus hombres para retirarse.
Do you think they got married or do you think they called off the wedding at the altar?
¿Creen que se casaron o que cancelaron la boda en el altar?
