Este es el tipo de expresión que me deja con la boca abierta: es bien idiomática ¡y tiene su equivalente en español! Al menos en español rioplatense, o porteño. Ustedes dirán.

Veamos los siguientes ejemplos. ¿Cómo traducirían la expresión de hoy?

1) A: My dress is torn! Why didn't you tell me? I would have worn something else!
    B: You looked so excited in that dress... I just didn't have the heart to tell you.
    A: You fool!

2) A: Why did you go on holiday with Mary? I though you didn't like her.
     B: She asked me to go with her and... she doesn't have any friends or family... I just didn't have the heart to say no.

3) A: I thought I asked you to fire Mr. Smith... Why is he here?
     B: I tried... but he told me that his wife is sick and they don't have insurance... I just didn't have the heart to fire him.

I didn't have the heart to do something = I felt that it would be insensitive to do something, right?

¿Cómo dirían esto en español? Aquí van mis versiones. Es una expresión informal que se usa mucho en Buenos Aires y otras ciudades de Argentina, pero no sé si en todo el país y dudo mucho de que se use en otros países de América Latina. Si algún lector es de otro país y tiene otra traducción, ¡por favor, comparta!

         ¡Tengo el vestido roto! ¿Por qué no me dijiste? ¡Me habría puesto otra cosa!
    B: You looked so excited in that dress... I just didn't have the heart to tell you.
         Es que te veías tan contenta con ese vestido... No me daba para decirte.
    A: You fool!
         ¡Tonto!

2) A: Why did you go on holiday with Mary? I though you didn't like her.
         ¿Por qué te fuiste de vacaciones con María? ¿No era que no te caía bien? 
    B: She asked me to go with her and... she doesn't have any friends or family... I just didn't have the heart to say no.
         Me pidió que fuera con ella y... no tiene amigos ni familia... No me dio para decirle que no.

3) A: I thought I asked you to fire Mr. Smith... Why is he here?
         ¿No te pedí que despidieras al señor Smith?... ¿Qué hace acá?
     B: I tried... but he told me that his wife is sick and they don't have insurance... I just didn't have the heart to fire him.
          Lo intenté... pero me dijo que la mujer está enferma y no tienen obra social... No me dio para despedirlo.

"No me da para" es como decir "Me daba pena". ¿Se les ocurren  más ejemplos u otra manera de decir lo mismo en español?
