Save the day
Las palabras day y date son bastante parecidas. Son casi lo mismo, excepto que date es, quizá, más específica.
What day is it today? It's Wednesday.
What date is it today? It's Wednesday, April 15th.
Pero en las frases save the date y save the day, ¡son muy diferentes! Save the date significa reservarse una fecha para un evento especial. Es por eso que muchas tarjetas de invitación a cumpleaños y casamientos incluyen esa leyenda.
En general, se manda antes de enviar la invitación propiamente dicha, para que la gente vaya sabiendo que tiene que guardarse ese día para ese evento en particular.
¿Y save the day? How do you save a day?
Save the day se dice cuando se logra revertir una mala situación, cuando se encuentra una salida o solución a un problema.
1) It looked like we were going to lose the game but Mike kicked two late goals and saved the day.
2) We didn't have a lighter to light the candles on the cake, but Mary lent us some matches and saved the day.
3) A: So how does the movie end?
B: The hero saves the day by shooting the bad guys and rescuing the girl, of course.
