Take a toll






¡Tranquilos! No les voy a cobrar peaje por pasar por aquí. Toll es peaje. ¿Sabían? La cabina de peaje es la toll booth. ¿Y take a toll?... Miren el siguiente ejemplo.

1) Years of sunbathing took a toll on Jane's skin. She's 35 and she looks like 50!

2) A: You look like hell! Did you go out last night?
     B: Yeah. I'm not a kid anymore. It's taken its toll. I'm tired and hungover. I don't think I can go to work today.

Como ven, es como si algunas situaciones nos "cobraran peaje". No son gratis y "nos pasan factura". Eso es a lo que nos referimos cuando decimos que algo takes a toll on somebody/something. No es una expresión del todo informal. La he visto en muchísimos artículos periodísticos y se dice en los noticieros (por ejemplo, cuando se habla de una crisis que ha golpeado mucho a un lugar, The crisis has really taken a toll on that area.). Es decir, úsenla sin miedo. ¿Se les ocurren más ejemplos? Les dejo otro:

3) A: I ran into Mike yesterday.
          Ayer me encontré con Mike.
    B: Your highschool friend? He used to be so handsome! How is he?
          ¿Tu amigo de la secundaria? ¡Qué lindo que era! ¿Cómo está?
    A: Let's just say time has taken a toll on him...
          Digamos que el paso del tiempo le ha pasado factura...
    B: He's bold, isn't he? All my highschool friends are.
          Está pelado, ¿no? Todos mis amigos del secundario están pelados.
